Have you ever had a clock or other device stop working? What happened to make it stop working? In this unit, students make observations of a winding clock and a plug-in clock and consider the similarities and differences in what makes the two turn on and stay on. From there, the unit supports students in developing ideas about energy transfer by electrical currents as they go on school tours, take apart devices, and build simple circuits. Students also notice that some devices we use to tell time always know what time it is, and some have to be set by hand, which leads us to wonder how devices are designed to communicate and receive information. Students engage in an engineering design project about information and energy transfer and learn about how criteria and constraints shape designs. Unit investigations also help students understand that we generate electricity from renewable and nonrenewable resources. To end the unit, students apply all the ideas they have learned to design a Martian space rover that we power and can communicate with from Earth. Our purpose in this book is twofold. First, we introduce the basic skill set and knowledge base used by practicing instructional designers. We do this through chapters contributed by experts in the field who have either academic, research-based backgrounds, or practical, on-the-job experience (or both). Our goal is that students in introductory instructional design courses will be able to use this book as a guide for completing a basic instructional design project. We also hope the book is useful as a ready resource for more advanced students or others seeking to develop their instructional design knowledge and skills. Have you ever seen something in the world that is balanced in an interesting or puzzling way? Have you wondered how it stays balanced without falling over? This unit launches with art sculptures that do just this – the sculptures balance and move in ways that make students wonder how they work. Through a series of investigations, students develop ideas about the multiple forces acting on a sculpture to keep it upright and not fall over, or to create predictable motion. Students plan and carry out investigations to test what works and does not work to design sculptures. The unit re-anchors with a new type of sculpture – one that moves in interesting ways using magnets with nothing making contact. Students learn about the size and direction of forces between magnets and between magnets and some metal objects.
